Local children’s therapy centre, Kids Are Kids! Therapy and Education Centre has their gardens looking exceptional for summer thanks to the volunteer help of employees at corporate mining company, Newmont Asia Pacific. Not only did they volunteer their time and staff but also provided mulch to the value of $750.
As part of their community volunteer employee program, Newmont Asia Pacific proactively looks to engage with and support the local communities in which they operate. Kids Are Kids! were hand-picked as the lucky recipient of gardening services for a full day on Thursday 6th November. Newmont Asia Pacific Global Supply Director , Gavin Praxl said selecting Kids Are Kids! was not a tough decision. “We identified Kids Are Kids! as a great opportunity for our volunteering event in that they are a children’s facility providing critical services and that being a small not-for-profit organisation they don’t necessarily get the publicity, volunteers and donations that larger charitable organisations do”, Mr Praxl said.
Around 20 staff willingly gave up their day in the office to work up a sweat spreading mulch and weeding for the local not-for-profit therapy centre that rely heavily on the financial and volunteer support from individuals and corporations.
Jane Barker, CEO of Kids Are Kids! said, “We were astounded that a corporation of such a large size appreciated the importance of our work to children and their families. It goes to show that large organisations can care enough to support small charity organisations like ours”. Kids Are Kids! provide Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy and Clinical Psychology services to children aged 0-13 years with learning difficulties, delays or disabilities.
The hard-working volunteers from Newmont Asia Pacific were provided morning tea and refreshments from Kids Are Kids! as a small gesture of their goodwill. Amongst laughs and chats, a BBQ lunch was shared before the last of the gardens were manicured at 3pm. “Our families can now walk into an even more inviting environment and the refreshed gardens will assist in our professional presentation, we cannot express enough our gratitude to Newmont Mining and their staff”, said Ms Barker.
Newmont Asia Pacific continue to be one of the world’s largest gold companies, with over 29,000 employees and contractors globally and operations in the United States, Australia, Peru, New Zealand, Indonesia, Ghana and Suriname. Amongst environmental sustainability and health and safety for their workers, Newmont Mining believe their success depends upon creating value in the community. They have the support of Kids Are Kids!.
