But Nobody is Talking About it.

SPA (Speech Pathology Association) celebrates its Inaugural Swallowing Awareness Day on Wednesday May 11th.

Swallowing. Everybody is doing it but nobody is talking about it. SPA recognises speech, language and communication difficulties and causes for those difficulties all during the year. Dysphagia is the name given to a condition whereby the person experiences difficulty or discomfort in swallowing.

Speech Pathologists around the world help millions of people ease the burden of Dysphagia and maintain their basicĀ  right to swallow. Did you know that 1 in 17 people in their lifetime will experience Dysphagia?

Dysphagia can effect a person’s ability to safely swallow food, drink and medications and if left untreated can lead to devastating effects on a person’s physical and emotional well-being.

Dysphagia can occur at any time of a person’s life including infancy and child-hood. How do you know if you your baby or child could be experiencing Dysphagia?

  • Difficulty sucking during breast or bottle feeding
  • The feeling that food or drink gets stuck in the throat
  • The feeling that food or drink is going the wrong way
  • Long mealtimes or eating slowly
  • Choking, coughing or frequent throat clearing during or after mealtime
  • Becoming short of breath or is breathing changes during eating or drinking
  • Avoiding certain foods because they are difficult to swallow
  • Frequent chest injections with no known cause
  • Weight lose because of difficulty eating
