State of the Art Sensory Wing Comes to Life for Special Needs Kids

In March this year, the annual Think Fragile X Gala Dinner raised in excess of $160,000 for Kids Are Kids! Therapy and Education Centre. The support from attendees, corporate and individual sponsors was overwhelming. With the incredible amount of money raised by Maria and Luke Goss’s Think Fragile X Foundation, the Sensory Wing Project at Kids Are Kids! is now underway at the Bateman centre.

CEO, Jane Barker said, “This is a highly significant project for Kids Are Kids! with a very substantial amount of money donated towards the establishment of a world-class Sensory Wing”. Once the Sensory Wing is complete, Kids Are Kids! will be able to include fantastic sensory based activities through their Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Pathology services.

The Project will involve all Kids Are Kids! staff, families and stakeholders to collaborate on the design of the Sensory Wing, provide expert clinical input into the room’s design and work out how these facilities can be used by everyone. Last week a planning workshop was held with the Occupational Therapy team to produce the initial design.

Founder of The Think Fragile X Foundation, Maria Goss, is thrilled to be part of such a significant project, “The Sensory Wing is aimed at providing children with sensory issues a safe place where they can explore, learn and calm themselves through touch, feel, sound and light – many places do not have these facilities for special needs children”.
The completion is anticipated for early 2016.

Building renovations are also underway for the Family Respite Area and Gross Motor Skills Room which has been made possible as a result of the funds raised at the 2014 Think Fragile X Gala Dinner. Jane Barker said, “It’s exciting times here at Kids Are Kids! – to have these facilities for our families in such a short time is a huge accomplishment, made possible through support from The Think Fragile X Foundation”.
