Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities at home, at school and in the community. Our paediatric occupational therapists support children with developmental delays, disabilities and difficulties with everyday tasks, helping them build independence, confidence and participation in daily life.
You may wish to consult one of our occupational therapists if your child experiences difficulties with:
- Fine motor skills: using pencils, scissors, cutlery, zips and buttons.
- Gross motor skills: movement, balance, coordination and physical activities such as running and jumping.
- Visual perceptual skills: skills that help children interpret and make sense of what they see, supporting activities such as reading, writing and completing puzzles.
- Self-care skills: everyday tasks such as dressing, eating, personal hygiene and toileting.
- Self-management and organisation: managing belongings, following routines, organising tasks and developing independence.
- Sensory processing: understanding and responding to sensory information, including sensory sensitivities that may affect a child’s comfort, behaviour and participation in daily activities.
- Self-regulation: recognising and managing emotions, energy levels and responses to everyday situations, with support to develop strategies for coping with challenges and returning to a calm, organised state.
- Interoception: recognising and interpreting internal body signals, such as hunger, thirst, needing the toilet, feeling hot or cold, and noticing signs of emotions or stress.
Family-centred Occupational Therapy
At Kids Are Kids!, we take a family-centred approach to paediatric occupational therapy. Parents and carers are integral members of the team. We work with you to establish goals based on your child’s individual needs and your family’s priorities, then develop practical strategies to support progress.
Our occupational therapists help families build the knowledge and confidence to practise skills within everyday routines, making it easier to carry strategies over into home, school and community life.
